I have had problems with my feet for a few years and have gotten really out of shape from not working out. Recently I decided to start swimming in the mornings for exercise to help lose weight. I got a membership to a pool and have been going 3-4 times a week from 5:30-6:30 or 6-7 (depending on if my wife is working out that day also).
So to my question. Does anyone have some advice? I grew up swimming for fun but never did it for exercise and cardio. I am trying to focus on just getting better each time and staying positive but I have been struggling.
When I go I can typically only complete about 5 laps down and back, and I can never swim down and back without stopping, which is embarrassing because I see people much older than myself(I am 25 btw), doing laps back and forth without stopping. I get out of breath before reaching the other side each time I try.
So far I have learned to exhale under the water and to roll my body when I need to breathe in. This has worked for me much more than what I was doing but I find myself getting out of breath still and getting a good bit of water in my mouth. I struggle to keep looking at the bottom of the pool due to running out of breath. I get extremely tired during and after my swims even though I am not doing a ton of laps.
The last couple of times I have went I had to stop my swimming early due to feeling nauseas and like I was going to throw up when I was swimming. I don’t eat before going but typically drink some water or some zero sugar Powerade. I don’t know if I need to be drinking more water or if I should eat something prior to going in the mornings. It has been a frustrating start but I want to keep going and get better. Any advice?
TLDR: I am new to swimming and need help to be able to swim longer without feeling nauseous and without getting too tired or winded.
