im a 43 y.o. male that cant swim at all. i was born and raised near the water. took swimming lessons as a kid. in school and after school with various swimming instructors. all up ive probably spent more than 1000 hrs learning to swim in my teens. eventually by 20 i just conceded i could never learn.
recently one of my employees was shocked to learn i cant swim (they swim 10klms daily). he has decided he wants to teach me. no harm done, we go to pool.
so in the pool he doesnt do any kicking or anything, we start off with the whole "first you must get comfortable in the water before you learn how to kick"
my argument is, how can i feel comfortable in the water, if i cant kick etc. it seems like he is trying to put the horse before the cart.
to put my ability(inabilty) into perspective, ive nearly drowned 3 times. 3rd time gave me phobia. in my late teens spent 5 years snorkeling (every day through summer)with friends to try to overcome fear. for me, kicking just doesnt seem to do anything. i simply cant move forward now mater how i kick.
what are peoples thoughts on this?
