Swim buoys: Are there really any differences between brands?

Summer is coming to my city, and while the pandemic still looms and threatens to keep pools closed, I don't want to spend another summer not swimming.

So I figure I'll try open water swimming... but I want to be able to take my stuff with me (light clothing, phone, wallet, keys, subway pass) so I thought I'd try a swim buoy.

I see options from familiar triathlon brands like Orca and XTerra, running around $50, all the way to no-name generic options for $15. Is there any difference between these brands?

I figure once they get the designs down, a generic might be as good as a brand name. Surely no brands offer a lifetime guarantee, right? Maybe there are differences in the bindings and chafing points, but they would soon be copied.

If only certain brands have a backpack design, I might be willing to pay for that though, for possible swim-run races.

Thanks!
