Thoughts on catch up drill for freestyle?

My head coach (I'm an assistant coach) doesn't like this drill, and I was told to not practice this with our swimmers. I previously liked to have the beginner swimmers grab the bottom of a kickboard and take strokes while holding the board. I thought this helped in a few ways, teaching them to have a outstretched arm at entry, helps hold their torso up a bit, keeps the hands apart so they don't cross their arms or hands during strokes. I don't specifically tell the swimmers this is catch up drill but I suppose it essentially is. I don't emphasize waiting on their hands when they swim and it's more for general stabilization and to assist them in some of the technique for their arms during stroke cycle. Some negatives that I can think of during this training would be that they won't get torso rotation during this drill (when using the kickboard) and that if they do it too much it could create a stall in their stroke, which is what I think coach is concerned about. I'm a younger coach, I do remember doing stuff like that as a kid but I am trying to educate myself further and wanted to see what some other opinions are.
