300% distance increase from one week to the next? (Freestyle)

I’m 22f training for a triathlon. I have a coach who’s more running specialized and he has asked me to swim 60 laps of 50 meters with 20 seconds rest in between each lap. It seems incredibly unreasonable to me as I’m almost a complete beginner in swimming.

I did my best today and swam with short fins but ended up “only” swimming 1km500. I can swim like 1000meters total without fins so I knew it would be hard to reach 3km. I used to feel a lot of anxiety in the water and would usually panic and kinda fight the water. For the first time today I felt the famous glide and I felt so good and happy but my coach didn’t seem too satisfied. You wouldn’t have a 300% increase in running distance so I suppose you shouldn’t increase your swimming distance that much from one week to the next either? Also, is it bad to swim with short fins?

TLDR= Should a beginner and former afraid swimmer have a 300% increase in distance? Also, are training fins bad to swim a lot with?
