Backstroke is my favorite. I've pretty much got that down except for timing my turns. Second favorite is freestyle but for the life of me, I cannot get the breathing down. I try to force as much air out right before turning my head and it feels like no matter how much, it's not enough and I cannot inhale correctly. I do not take a deep breath before starting, just a shallow one and still cannot force out enough air. I don't know how to correct this. I've tried hanging onto the wall arms outstretched while turning my head and that's easy for me but actually swimming a lap is what I'm failing at.
