How to improve constant kick?

Currently a sophomore on my swim team. Coach told me at the first practice to kick a lot more and today I was told by a buddy of mine that the reason I was going much slower was because I wasn’t kicking during my freestyle as much. When i do kick sets im usually last as well. I’ve been playing water polo for years now but i’ve never had issues with my flutterkick until now. Whenever i force my legs, i just feel like i can’t concentrate on my stroke at all. It feels like i have to put in way too much effort to kick well, keep my ankles from crossing, and then I start to slow down A LOT. Does anyone have any helpful tips/sets I can do to solve this?
