Is this how adults learn how to swim?

I'm an adult that doesn't know how to swim (was afraid of water as a child). Decided to learn because it looks very relaxing and healthy and confirmed with the gym that they had classes for beginners. I was expecting to to do basic exercises by the pool in my first day, nothing very tiresome. I explained my situation to the instructor, and told him I didn't even know how to float. The first thing he asked me to do was to give a big impulse with my legs using the side of the pool to move forward. I though it was weird but did it anyway only to go to the bottom after the impulse. Stood up and then he asked to me to hold a floater and SWIM across the pool. I struggled a lot and swallowed some water. After a few minutes doing this, he asked me to swim on my back holding the floater across the pool. Am I supposed to be swimming across the pool like this from day one? It was super hard, I've swallow water many times and was afraid of drowning. Is this the way people learn how to swim from the start?
